What I love about the city of Bhopal is that it is always vibrant with different cultural activities. I watched Chakravyuh, a play directed by Atul Satya Kaushik, at Ravindra Bhavan on March 26­­th . Among other artists, the role of Shri Krishna was played by the renowned Nitish Bharadwaj who had bowled over the TV audience in this avatar in B R Chopra’s Mahabharata serial in late eighties . The script of Chakravyuh is about five thousand years old and well known, yet its dialogues are clothed in modern psychology and everyday practical wisdom. Over the past twelve years, this play has been performed more than hundred times. Its duration is approximately two hours. Let me assure you that it is worth watching every single minute.

In the opening scene, Shri Krishna directly addressed the audience, saying: “Who knows whether the epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata actually happened or not? It is not necessary to remember which all mighty warriors fought and how they died in the end in gory battles. What is more important is to imbibe the lessons drawn from those events.”

We all know that Abhimanyu was cornered and killed by seven great Kaurav warriors. When Arjuna learnt about his son’s death, he was grief-stricken and asked each member of the Pandav camp where his son was. Out of hesitation and helplessness, everyone avoided answering him. Then Shri Krishna reproached the tongue- tied Yudhishthira, saying, “How long will you keep running away from the inconvenient questions in life? Whether you like it or not, the difficult situations need to be faced bravely. By shirking away from your duty, do you want to put this responsibility of pacifying Arjuna on me? Go, answer Arjuna’s question yourself.”

Krishna rhetorically informed the grief-stricken Arjuna that, apart from the seven great warriors, there was an eighth malevolent force present at the time of Abhimanyu’s killing. When Arjuna was startled, Krishna went on to explain that the fatal blow was also driven by Draupadi’s vow, which she had taken in the royal court after the attempt to disrobe her—that she would not tie her hair until she had washed it with Duryodhana’s blood. During the battle, Abhimanyu had a moment when he could had killed Duryodhana but life was spared to him. Abhimannyu, out of regard for Bhima’s pledge to kill Duryodhana to satisfy Draupadi, did not want to be an obstruction in fulfilling his senior kin’s personal vindication. The take away lesson is that all unaddressed conflicts in relationships will take a great toll in life.

In one scene, when Yudhishthira lamented young Abhimanyu’s death, Krishna solemnly expounded that the outcomes of war are just like war itself. This dialogue is strikingly relevant for all times. In contemporary wars, thousands of young soldiers are merely cannon fodder, and there is severe environmental destruction all around. A war, no matter where it occurs in the world, affects the entire planet. At present, there is a direct fight involving Israel, Iran, and the United States, yet every country is affected by it. Ghastly explosions occur in those regions, but their scorching impacts reach everywhere.

“Will Abhimanyu return or not?”— widowed Uttara’s helpless mourning deeply moved the audience in the theatre hall. On hearing about her husband’s death, she asked Krishna how she would raise a child without a father. Krishna gave a philosophical reply: “Every human being embodies both masculine and feminine energies—only their proportions differ in men and women. In crisis, a woman can also display immense strength and accomplish even the most difficult tasks. Mother Sita, too, raised Luv and Kush alone in the forest in their father’s absence.” Krishna further prophesied that in times to come, women would, by their own conscious choice, become single mothers and raise their children without any dependence on their husbands. It is not surprising that this prophecy has come true today, as we see many such women around us after marital separation.

Arjuna, in tears, asked Krishna why, being like a father and a teacher to Abhimanyu, he did not teach him how to successfully emerge from the strategic military trap, Chakravyuh, laid by the enemy camp. Krishna retorted rather bluntly that, as a father, it was Arjuna’s primary responsibility to teach this skill to his son himself and which he had failed to discharge. This lesson remains equally relevant today—that despite the busyness of life demanded by our complex daily routines, parents must spend time with their children to develop them to their full potential to enable them to face life’s myriad challenges.

As the play approached its conclusion, another important lesson was underscored. Krishna sermoniszed that every person enters his own “Chakravyuh” every day, where seven evil warriors surround him—desire, anger, greed, jealousy, attachment, falsehood, and ego. The one who fights and defeats these demons through awareness, breaks through the Chakravyuh and attains liberation. Otherwise, even Krishna himself could not escape from the web of Karma. Caught in the cycle of actions, Krishna sometimes tended cows and at other times drove Arjuna’s chariot. If even the divine could not escape this Chakravyuh, what chance do ordinary humans have?

सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रमों से अक्सर जगमगाती मध्य प्रदेश की राजधानी, भोपाल, में अतुल सत्य कौशिक द्वारा निर्देशित नाटक, चक्रव्यूह, का मंचन रवींद्र भवन में 26 मार्च को हुआ l अन्य कलाकारों के अलावा इस में श्री कृष्ण की भूमिका प्रसिद्द नितीश भारद्वाज ने निभाई l चक्रव्यूह की पटकथा तो पांच हज़ार वर्ष पुरानी और सुपरिचित है ही किन्तु इसके संवाद आज के संदर्भ में भी आधुनिक मनोविज्ञान और दैनिक व्यवहारकुशलता की दृष्टि से बड़े सार्थक हैं l यह नाटक पिछले 12 वर्षों में अब तक 100 से अधिक बार खेला जा चुका है l इसकी अवधि लगभग एक घंटा 50 मिनट है l

नाटक के आरंभिक दृश्य में श्री कृष्ण दर्शकों को सम्बोधित करते हुए कहते हैं , “ कौन जाने कि रामायण और महाभारत जैसी घटनाएं वास्तव में घटी भी थी या नहीं l आवश्यक नहीं कि यह याद रक्खा जाए कि कौन -कौन योद्धा उस रण में मरे और कैसे मरे, किन्तु महत्वपूर्ण यह है कि उन घटनाओं से जुड़े हुए पाठ को याद रखा जाए l

अकेले अभिमन्यु को सात महारथियों ने घेर कर मारा था l जब अर्जुन को अपने बेटे के वध का पता चलता है तो वह दुखी होकर पांडव दल में एक -एक से पूछता है कि उसका पुत्र कहाँ है l संकोच और विवशता में हर कोई आँखें चुराए उसे उत्तर देने से कतराता है l तब श्री कृष्ण युधिष्ठिर को उलाहना देते हैं, “कब तक जीवन में प्रश्नों से भागते रहोगे ? प्रश्न के उत्तर तो देने ही पड़ेंगे l अपने कर्त्तव्य से विमुख होकर क्या यह दायित्व भी तुम मेरे ऊपर डालना चाहते हो ? जाओ , अर्जुन को उसके प्रश्न का उत्तर दो l”

पुत्र की मृत्यु पर आहत अर्जुन को श्री कृष्ण सूचित करते हैं कि उसके पुत्र , अभिमन्यु, के वध के समय कौरवों के सात महारथियों के अलावा कोई और भी वहां था l यह सुन अर्जुन चौंक जाता है तो कृष्ण बताते हैं कि अभिमन्यु की देह को लगे घातक आठवें बाण के पीछे द्रौपदी की वह शपथ थी जो उसने भरी सभा में अपने चीरहरण की चेष्टा के बाद ली थी कि वह अपने केश तब तक न बांधेगी जब तक वह उन्हें दुर्योधन के रक्त से न धो लेगी l युद्ध में अभिमन्यु के पास एक अवसर ऐसा भी आया था जब वह दुर्योधन को मारने ही वाला था पर उसने दुर्योधन को जीवन दान दिया था l केवल इसलिए क्यूंकि भीम ने दुर्योधन को मारने की शपथ ली थी और अभिमन्यु उस प्रतिज्ञा में बाधक नहीं बनना चाहता था । इस घटना का सत्य यही है कि व्यक्तिगत मानसिक घाव यदि समय रहते न भरे जाए तो वे न केवल उस मनुष्य को अत्यंत पीड़ा पहुंचाते है बल्कि पूरे समाज में भी उत्पात मचाने की क्षमता रखते है । विश्व में कितनी ही लड़ाईयां ऐसी ही घावों को लेकर हुई हैं ।

एक दृश्य में युधिष्ठिर अभिमन्यु की मृत्यु पर विलाप करते हैं तो श्री कृष्ण कहते हैं कि युद्ध के परिणाम भी युद्ध की तरह ही होते हैं l यह संवाद आज के हमारे संदर्भ में भी कितना सटीक है l सामयिक युद्ध में हजारों की संख्या में हर सेना के नव युवकों का नरसंहार हो रहा है और पर्यावरण की भारी क्षति हो रही है l युद्ध भले ही विश्व के किसी भी कोने में हो किन्तु उसका दुष्प्रभाव सारी पृथ्वी पर पड़ता है l वर्तमान में इजराइल, ईरान और अमेरिका के बीच सीधा युद्ध है किन्तु इस से आहत हर देश है l भांति भांति के विस्फोट भले ही उन देशों में हो रहे हों किन्तु उनकी झुलसाती आंच हर देश में पहुँच रही है l

“अभिमन्यु आएगा कि नहीं ?” उत्तरा का यह क्रंदन दर्शकों को अभिभूत कर गया था l पति की मृत्यु का समाचार सुनकर उत्तरा श्री कृष्ण से पूछती है कि बिना पिता के एक बालक का पालन पोषण वह कैसे कर पायेगी l श्री कृष्ण का दार्शनिक उत्तर था : हर मनुष्य में पुरुष और प्रकृति का समावेश होता है - केवल उसका अनुपात नर और स्त्री में भिन्न भिन्न होता है l आवश्यकता पड़ने पर स्त्री भी अपने पौरुष से कठिन से कठिन काम कर दिखाती है l माँ सीता ने भी लव - कुश को उनके पिता की अनुपस्थिति में अकेले वन में ही पाला था l श्री कृष्ण भविष्यवाणी करते हुए कहते हैं कि आने वाले समय में स्त्रियां स्वयं अपनी इच्छा से एकल मां बनकर अपने बच्चों का पालन पोषण भी करेंगी l यह अचरज की बात नहीं कि अंततः यह भविष्वाणी फलित हुई और आज हम विवाह सम्बन्ध विच्छेद के बाद ऐसी कई महिलाओं को अपने आसपास देख सकते हैं l

अर्जुन श्री कृष्ण से रोते हुए पूछता है कि वे तो अभिमन्यु के पिता तुल्य थे और उसके गुरु भी थे तो उन्होंने क्यों नहीं उसे चक्रव्यूह तोड़ने की विद्या सिखाई ? इस पर श्री कृष्ण का उत्तर था कि अर्जुन को पिता होने के नाते यह विद्या स्वयं अपने पुत्र को सिखानी चाहिए थी l यह पाठ आज भी उतना ही प्रासंगिक है - अर्थात आज भी जीवन यापन के बीच व्यस्त रहते हुए भी माता -पिता को अपने बच्चों के साथ समय बिताना चाहिए जिससे उनके व्यक्तित्व का सम्पूर्ण विकास हो सके और वे जीवन की नयी चुनौतियों का सफलतापूर्वक सामना कर सके l

नाटक के अंत तक पहुँचते हुए एक और महत्वपूर्ण सीख हमें मिलती है l श्री कृष्ण कहते हैं कि प्रत्येक व्यक्ति हर दिन अपने चक्रव्यूह में प्रवेश करता है जहाँ सात महारथी उसे नित्य घेरते हैं - काम , क्रोध, लोभ, ईर्ष्या, मोह, असत्य, और अहंकार l जो व्यक्ति अपनी ज्ञान की धार से इन महारथियों से लड़ कर उन्हे परास्त करता है , वह ही चक्रव्यूह को भेद कर मोक्ष पाता है l अन्यथा चक्रव्यूह से तो स्वयं श्री कृष्ण भी न बच पाए थे l कर्मों के उसी चक्रव्यूह में फंसकर उन्होंने कभी गाय चराई और कभी अर्जुन का रथ हांका l जब स्वयं भगवान् भी चक्रव्यूह से ना बच पाए तो मनुष्यों की बिसात ही क्या ?

चूंकि पागलखाने में हिंदू, मुस्लिम और सिख पागल थे इसलिए यह निर्णय लिया गया कि हिन्दू और सिखों को हिंदुस्तान भेज दिया जाये । त्रासदी यह थी कि पागलों को स्वयं अपनी कोई सुध नहीं थी तो वह अपने देश को कैसे पहचानते ।
इस पागलखाने में बिशन सिंह नाम का एक पागल था जिसे बाकी पागल और अधिकारी टोबा टेक सिंह के नाम से बुलाते थे क्योंकि वह बार बार सभी से अपने जिला टोबा टेक सिंह के बारे में पूछा करता था जहां उसकी अपनी कुछ खेती की जमीन थी । बिशन सिंह पंद्रह वर्षों से सोया नहीं था और हमेशा खड़े रहने के कारण उसके पांव सूजे रहते थे ।
एक दिन बिशन सिंह ने दूसरे पागल से पूछा कि टोबा टेक सिंह हिंदुस्तान में है या पाकिस्तान में । दूसरे पागल की विशेषता थी कि वह अपने को भगवान मानता था । बिशन सिंह के प्रश्न के उत्तर में वह पागल हँसता हुआ बोला, "मैने अभी यह फैसला नहीं लिया है कि उसे पाकिस्तान में रखूं या हिंदुस्तान में ।"

जिस दिन अधिकारी पागलों को हिंदुस्तान भेज रहे थे, बिशन सिंह ने फिर उनसे पूछा कि टोबा टेक सिंह पाकिस्तान में है या हिंदुस्तान में । जब बिशन सिंह को पता चला कि टोबा टेक सिंह पाकिस्तान में है तो उसने हिंदुस्तान जाने से इंकार कर दिया । वह रात भर अपनी जगह पर खड़ा रहा और अगले दिन सूर्योदय होने पर चीख मार कर गिर पड़ा । “इधर उधर से कई अफ़सर दौड़े आए और देखा कि वो आदमी जो पंद्रह बरस तक दिन-रात अपनी टांगों पर खड़ा रहा था, औंधे मुँह लेटा है। उधर ख़ारदार तारों के पीछे हिंदोस्तान था... इधर वैसे ही तारों के पीछे पाकिस्तान। दरमियान में ज़मीन के उस टुकड़े पर जिसका कोई नाम नहीं था, टोबाटेक सिंह पड़ा था।”

हालांकि मंटो की यह कहानी बहुत पुरानी है पर यह आज भी सभी शरणार्थियों पर लागू होती है जो मजबूरी में अपने घर छोड़ कर दूसरे देशों में जा कर जीवन बसर करते है । राजनीति के स्वार्थ में धर्म और विचारधारा के नाम पर धरती पर सीमाएं खिंच जाती है और लोग दर बदर भटकने को मजबूर हो जाते है ।

आजकल मैं पाउलो कोएल्हो द्वारा लिखित पुस्तक, ' द विनर स्टैंड्स एलोन ' ( The Winner Stands Alone) पढ़ रहा हूँ । पाउलो ने किसी पागल पात्र के माध्यम से अपनी बात तो नहीं कही है पर कुछ मित्रों के बीच हुई बात में यह पूछा है कि सामान्य ( normal) का अर्थ क्या है । इसके उत्तर में एक पात्र द्वारा ४६ संदर्भों का उल्लेख किया गया है जिन्हें सामान्य करार दिया जा सकता है । उनमे से १० संदर्भ मैं पाठकों के समक्ष प्रस्तुत कर रहा हूं क्योंकि मुझे वह बड़े रोचक और आँख खोलने वाले लगे:

१. कोई भी वस्तु या स्थिति तब सामान्य है यदि वह हमें स्वयं को भुलाने में सफल हो या जिस कारण हम यह भी भूल जाए कि हम क्या चाहते है ।
२. युद्ध के नियम निर्धारण करना । ( जेनेवा कन्वेंशन)
३. वर्षों तक विश्वविद्यालय में अध्ययन के बाद किसी भी रोजगार के लायक न रहना ।
४.बिस्तर के बगल में रखे अलार्म घड़ी के चीत्कार के साथ हर सुबह उठना ।
५. भूख न होते हुए भी दिन में तीन बार भोजन करना ।
६. सड़क के यातायात में फंसने पर बेवजह झल्लाना और दूसरों को गाली देना ।
७. अवसाद को दूर करने के लिए टेलीविजन का सहारा लेना ।
८. जिस काम में कोई रुचि न हो उसको तीस वर्षों तक सिर्फ पेंशन पाने के लिए करते रहना ।
९. गले में रंग बिरंगा कपड़ा बांधना जिसे लोग टाई कहते है ।
१०. हर छपे हुए वक्तव्य को सच मान लेना ।

मुझे पूरा विश्वास है कि ऊपर दिये हर संदर्भ पर पाठकों के चेहरे पर मुस्कुराहट आयी होगी और उन्हें यह सोचने पर विवश होना पड़ा होगा कि सामान्य और असामान्य के बीच का अंतर हमारा स्वयं बनाया हुआ होता है ।

हाल ही में मैने एक फिल्म देखी थी, रेवोल्यूशनरी रोड, जो २००८ में बनी थी और जो इसी नाम की पुस्तक की कहानी पर आधारित है । मुख्य भूमिका में फ्रैंक और अप्रैल नाम के पति पत्नी है जो आपस में झगड़ते रहते है क्योंकि दोनों की जीवन से आकांक्षाएं भिन्न भिन्न है ।

फिल्म के एक दृश्य में इस दम्पति के घर जॉन नाम का एक हमउम्र मनोरोगी अपने माँ और पिता के साथ चाय के निमंत्रण पर पहुंचता है । घर में घुसते ही जॉन की मां औपचारिकता में अप्रैल से पूछती है कि उसके बच्चे कहां है । अप्रैल संकोच से बताती है कि बच्चे अपने मित्र की जन्मदिन पार्टी में गए है । जॉन बच्चाें की अनुपस्थिति को हंसी में टालते हुए कहता है, " चिंता न करें । मेरे घर में भी यदि मुझे पता चले कि कोई पागल मेहमान आने वाला है, तो स्वाभाविक है कि मैं बच्चों को उस से दूर ही रखूंगा ।"

बातचीत के दौरान जॉन अपने मेजबान से पूछता है कि वह क्या काम करता है। जवाब में फ्रैंक कहता है कि उसका काम कुछ खास नहीं है और उसे उस काम में कोई रुचि भी नहीं है । जॉन, जिसका स्वयं का दिमागी इलाज़ चल रहा है, फ्रैंक से पूछता है, " तो फिर तुम वह काम करते क्यों हो? अच्छा, अच्छा। मुझे मालूम है मुझे तुम्हारे काम में टांग नहीं अडानी चाहिए । मुझे अपने प्रश्न का उत्तर मालूम है । तुम घर घर खेलना चाहते हो। तुम्हे बड़ा सा घर चाहिए और इसके लिए तुम वो काम भी करने को तैयार हो जो तुम्हें बिल्कुल पसंद नहीं ।"

थोड़ी देर बाद फ्रैंक बताता है कि उसने और उसकी पत्नी ने यह तय किया है कि वे दोनों अपनी अरुचिकर काम को छोड़ कर पैरिस चले जायेंगे और अपनी मर्जी का काम करेंगे। इस पर कुछ इस तरह से संवाद होता है:

जॉन: तो आप दोनों किस से दूर भागना चाह रहे है ?
फ्रैंक: हम भाग नहीं रहें है ।
अप्रैल: हम दूसरे तरह का जीवन खोज रहे है ।
फ्रैंक: संभवतः हम भाग कर ही जा रहें है । हम व्यर्थ के खालीपन से भाग कर जा रहें है ।
जॉन: व्यर्थ का खालीपन? यह आपने सही बात कही । बहुत से लोग खालीपन से लिपटे हुए है किंतु इसे पहचानने के लिए हिम्मत चाहिए ।

जब सारे अतिथि चले जाते है तो पति पत्नी के बीच जॉन को लेकर यह वार्तालाप होता है:
अप्रैल: वह पहला व्यक्ति था जो समझ रहा था कि हम क्या कह रहे थे ।
फ्रैंक: सही कह रही हो । शायद हम दोनों भी उसी की तरह पागल है ।
अप्रैल: यदि पागल होने का अर्थ अपनी मर्जी के हिसाब से जीना है, तो मुझे पूरी तरह से पागल कहलाने में कोई आपत्ति नहीं है ।

फिल्म के अंत में फ्रैंक अपना इरादा बदल देता है और अपनी पुरानी नौकरी पर ही रहना चाहता और इस बात को लेकर पति पत्नी में बहुत झगड़ा होता है क्यों कि अप्रैल देश छोड़ कर पैरिस में नए काम के पक्ष में है । गुस्साए हुए पति पत्नी के संवाद कुछ इस तरह थे:

फ्रैंक: तुम्हे मालूम है पागलपन किसे कहते है? एक मनुष्य जब अपने को किसी दूसरे से जोड़ न पाये या दूसरे से प्रेम न कर सके तो वह पागलपन की निशानी है ।
अप्रैल: फ्रैंक, बातें बनाने में तुम माहिर हो । काले को सफेद साबित करना हो तो तुमसे बढ़कर कोई नहीं । तुम्हारे हिसाब से मैं पागल हूं क्योंकि मैं तुमसे प्यार नहीं करती। तुम यही कहना चाहते हो न?

मैने पूरी फिल्म बड़ी तन्मयता से देखी और इस निष्कर्ष पर पहुँचा कि अक्सर पागलपन और विवेक में अंतर कर पाना कठिन काम है। शायद यह कहा जा सकता है कि हम सब अलग अलग किस्म के पागल है ।

I am often greatly impressed when skillful authors and movie makers surprise their readers and audience by providing deep insights through their crafted fictional characters who are supposed to be insane and totally incoherent in the first place. The creative artists have used the mad ramblings of crazy ones to point out the inconsistent and senseless attitudes of the people considered as worldly wise.

In the short story, ‘Toba Tek Singh’, Saadat Hasan Manto took the readers inside a lunatic asylum in Lahore where all sorts of crazy people were confined and who were busy in their daily idiosyncrasies expected of them. The story was based around the time of partition of India that was marked by lot of bloodshed. As the inmates of the asylum had both Muslims and Hindus, the administration got busy in identifying them so that they could be packed off to India or retained in the newly created Pakistan, depending on their faith, though all of them were bereft of their mental bearings and could not make any rational choice on their own.

There was one Sikh inmate of the asylum whose actual name was Bishan Singh. Yet, other inmates and attendants referred to him as Toba Tek Singh as he kept on pestering everyone to find about his native district by the same name that happened to be in Pakistan. Bishan Singh had not slept for fifteen years and had swollen feet and ankles because of standing all the time.

One day Bishan Singh asked another madman in the asylum who considered himself God, whether Toba Tek Singh was in Pakistan or India. Guffawing, the madman replied: “Neither, because I haven’t yet decided where to put it!”

On the day of transfer of lunatics to India, Bishan Singh refused to go over to India when he was told that the district Toba Tek Singh was still in Pakistan. He stood quietly all night and died with a scream at the sunrise. ‘After fifteen years on his feet, he was lying face down on the ground. India was on one side, behind a barbed wire fence. Pakistan was on the other side, behind another fence. Toba Tek Singh lay in the middle, on a piece of land that had no name.’

Though Saadat Hasan Manto’s Urdu story was first published in 1955 but it remains true even today in one way or another for all the immigrants- legal or illegal. It makes the readers wonder whether insanity was only in the asylum or among the people who were behind the country’s partition.

I am presently reading, ‘The Winner Stands Alone’, written by Paulo Coelho, the well- known author of ‘The Alchemist’ fame, from Brazil. Paulo has not exactly used a lunatic to emphasize the madness of the society but he chose a conversation among friends to answer the question: “What does being normal mean?” Interestingly, a list of forty-six instances is provided by him that qualify as normal. Few of the remarkably striking ones are reproduced below:

1. Normal is anything that makes us forget who we are and what we want.

2. Setting out rules for waging war (the Geneva Convention)

3. Spending years studying at university only to find at the end of it that you are unemployable.

4. Waking up each morning to a hysterical alarm clock on the bedside table.

5. Eating three times a day even if you are not hungry.

6. Swearing when in heavy traffic.

7. Avoiding depression with large doses of depression.

8. Working from nine to five every day at something that gives you no pleasure at all just so that, after thirty years, you can retire.

9. Wearing a scrap of colored cloth around your neck, even though it serves no useful purpose, but which answers to the name of ‘tie’.

10. Believing absolutely everything that appears in print. (I may also add WhatsApp here and AI videos circulating nowadays on social media.)

I am sure each one of the above statements will stop you in your track and make you think with a smile as to how abnormal can a normal attitude be.

Recently, I watched another movie, Revolutionary Road, made in 2008, which is based on a book written by Justin Haythe and having the same title. The lead pair is of Frank (played by Leonardo Dicaprio) and April (played by Kate Winslet) who were also the romantic couple of the movie, ‘Titanic’, in 1997. Interestingly, the romantic couple of the ‘Titanic’ is always bickering and is bitter in the latter movie because of their different ambitions and plans for future.

In ‘Revolutionary Road’, John, a psychiatric patient of Frank’s age, pays a courtesy visit to the young couple with his parents. As they enter the house, John’s old mother asks politely about April’s children and she is told apologetically by the host that they have gone to their friend’s birthday party. John makes light of the children’s absence by remarking jokingly, “Don’t worry. If I had a certified lunatic coming around the house, I’d probably get the kids out of the way too.”

John asks Frank about his job who responds that he works for Knox Business Machines. Frank admits that there is nothing interesting about his stupid job. John, who is loose in the head, goes on rambling, “Why do you do it then? Okay, okay, okay. I know it’s none of my business. And besides, I know the answer. You want to play house, you got to have a job. You want to play very nice house, very sweet house, then you got to have a job you don’t like. Anyone comes along and asks ‘What do you it for?’ He’s probably on a four-hour pass from the State funny farm.”

During the chitchat Frank and April share their plan to quit the present job and move from US to Paris for a new life. This news comes as a surprise to the other guests who are not aware of their plan and they cannot accept how someone can just take such a momentous decision about one’s life.

After the tea everyone takes a walk in the garden and the following dialogues are exchanged:

JOHN: So, what do a couple of people like you have to run away from?

FRANK: We’re not running.

JOHN: And what’s in Paris?

APRIL: A different way of life.

FRANK: So maybe we are running... We’re running from the hopeless emptiness of the whole life here.

JOHN: The hopeless emptiness? Now, you’ve said it. Plenty of people are on to the emptiness, but it takes real guts to see the hopelessness. Wow

After everyone departs, April is gushing with happiness and the following conversation happens between the couple about John’s visit:

April: He’s the first person who seemed to know what we were talking about.

FRANK: That’s true. Maybe we are just as crazy as he is.

APRIL: If being crazy means living life as if it matters then I don’t care if we are completely insane.

Later in the movie Frank chickens out and does not want to move to Paris but April is insistent so both of them have an acrimonious altercation as below:

Frank: Do you know what the definition of insanity is? The inability to relate to another human being. It’s the inability to love.

April: Oh, Frank, you really are a wonderful talker! If black could be made into white by talking, you’d be the man for the job. So now I’m crazy because I don’t love you -- right? Is that the point?

As I watched the entire movie in silence, it left me contemplating that it is often difficult to distinguish between madness and sanity. At best it can be said that each one of us is simply insane in one’s own special way.

Let me end with another pearl of wisdom from Paulo Coelho form ‘The Winner Stands Alone.’ While writing about Christian Dior, French fashion designer and founder of one of the world’s top fashion houses, the author informs, “He was attacked and insulted, but he knew he was going in the right direction, which is always the opposite direction to everyone else.”

June, the elderly woman in the film, is hospitalized and the grim diagnosis is learnt. Her middle-aged children- a son and three daughters- gather around her with the grandchildren in tow. There are old tensions within the family and each of them is struggling with problems in their own lives.

In one scene, June’s son, while wandering aimlessly in the hospital corridors, notices a patient in another room wearing a virtual reality headset. The patient is all alone but visibly delighted by what he is seeing in his virtual world. When June’s son asks the nurse about the strange spectacle before him, he learns that the patient too is terminally ill and has only a few days left to live. He is ticking all the wishes on his bucket list during his final days. At that moment, while lying in his hospital bed, he is climbing Mount Everest through virtual reality. Hearing this, June’s son smiles softly and walks away nodding in understanding.

In another scene, June’s daughter is gently combing her mother’s hair as she lies in the hospital bed. With a faint smile, June says to her daughter, “I wish I had lived a bit more irresponsibly. I wish I had been a bit of a slut.” I found such frank confession of a mother to her daughter quite striking.

It is certain that we all spend our entire lives as servants of desires; yet those desires are never fully satisfied till the very end. It is impossible to imagine anyone, however long he might have lived, completely devoid of desires. Mirza Ghalib captured this truth beautifully:

‘हजारों ख्वाहिशें ऐसी कि हर ख्वाहिश पर दम निकले,

बहुत निकले मेरे अरमान पर फिर भी कम निकले ।’

“Thousands of desires, each worth dying for—
many of them I have fulfilled, yet still too few.”

Another couplet by Ghalib reinforces the same thought:

गो हाथ को जुम्बिश नहीं,
आँखों में तो दम है,
रहने दो अभी
साग़र-ओ-मीना मेरे आगे ।

“Though my hands can no longer move,
there is still life left in my eyes;
let the wine cup and the goblet remain before me for now.”

Looking back at life, I find that desires are like ocean waves, constantly arriving at the shore. Just as no wave is exactly like the previous one, desires too keep changing with time. Someone expressed this reality humorously:

‘हर उम्र का है शौक़ जुदा,

बचपन में खिलौने,

फ़िर माशूका,

और अंत में ख़ुदा।’

“Every age has its own longing—
toys in childhood,
a beloved in youth,
and God in the end.”

Just a few days ago, I was telling a friend how hard we had once worked to secure our much coveted job in our youth, and how happy we were when we got it. Later, we spent years eagerly waiting to be free of that very job through retirement. And after retiring and sitting idle for a while, many of my friends are either back in some regular government work or searching again for a new job. In other words, the cycle of desires never really ends.

Those inclined towards spirituality believe that mere fulfillment of desires cannot bring true happiness because new desires will inevitably arise. True joy, they say, comes from contentment and detachment. On this subject, an old colleague once laughed and said, “Spiritual people talk about liberation and say that all desires end once liberation is attained. But isn’t the desire for liberation itself just another desire?” He had a point. It reminded me of these lines by Baba Sheikh Farid:

“कागा सब तन खाइयों,
कि चुन चुन खाइयों मांस,
दो नयना मत खाइयों
मोहे पिया मिलन की आस ।”

“O crow, eat away this entire body if you must,
pick at it piece by piece;
just do not touch my eyes—
for they still yearn to behold my beloved.”

In other words, the longing remains even after death. We desire things according to our wishes—whether in this world or even after death.

It is often said that if a desire remains unfulfilled in life, the soul wanders as a ghost. Whether or not unfulfilled desires turn souls into spirits after death is hard to say, but even while alive, desires shape a person into either something demonic or divine. If one’s desires are rooted in compassion, charity, kindness, and empathy, a person becomes godlike. If they arise from anger, jealousy, greed, and fear, then the energy of those negative emotions makes a person no less than a restless spirit.

Desires have a life force of their own. Even leaving aside moral considerations, psychologists have long pointed out that desires we cannot fulfill—or suppress because we consider them improper—resurface repeatedly in our dreams.

And so, remembering the dialogue from Goodbye June, I conclude this reflection on desires with a couplet by Khwaja Mir Dard:

सैर कर दुनिया की ग़ाफ़िल,
ज़िंदगानी फिर कहां,
ज़िंदगी गर कुछ रही,
तो ये जवानी फिर कहां ।

“Wander through the world, O heedless one—
life will not come again;
and if life does remain,
this youth certainly will not.”

‘हर उम्र का है शौक़ जुदा, बचपन में खिलौने, फ़िर माशूका और अंत में ख़ुदा।'

कुछ दिन पहले ही मैं एक मित्र को कह रहा था कि युवावस्था में जिस नौकरी को पाने के लिए हम लोगों ने इतना परिश्रम किया और जिसे पाकर उस समय हम लोग इतना प्रसन्न थे, उसी से छुटकारा पाने के लिए बाद में हम लोग सेवा निवृत्ति की कितनी आस लगाए थे । सेवा निवृत्त होने के बाद फुर्सत से कुछ दिन बैठने पर मेरे बहुत से मित्र फिर किसी नियमित सरकारी काम में या तो लगे हुए है, या किसी नई नौकरी की खोज में है । अर्थात, इच्छाओं का निरंतर चक्र चलता रहता है ।

आध्यात्म से जुड़े लोग यह मानते है कि इच्छाओं की पूर्ति मात्र से आनंद प्राप्त नहीं हो सकता क्यों कि नई इच्छाएं जन्म लेती ही रहेंगी । संतोष और तटस्थता से अवश्य आनंद प्राप्त हो सकता है । इस विषय में मेरे एक पुराने सहयोगी ने हंसते हुए कहा था, "आध्यात्मिक लोग मोक्ष की बात करते है और कहते है कि मोक्ष मिलने से सभी इच्छाओं का अंत हो जाता है । किंतु मोक्ष की कामना भी एक और इच्छा ही तो है ।" उसकी बात में दम था और मुझे बाबा शेख फ़रीद की यह पंक्तियां याद आ गई:

कागा सब तन खाइयों,
कि चुन चुन खाइयों मांस,
दो नयना मत खाइयों
मोहे पिया मिलन की आस ।"
यानी कि, इच्छा रहती है कि मृत्यु के बाद भी मन मुताबिक व्यवस्था बनी रहे - लौकिक हो या पारलौकिक।

अक्सर यह सुनने में आता है कि यदि जीते जी कोई इच्छा अधूरी रह जाए तो मृत्यु के बाद उस व्यक्ति की आत्मा प्रेत बन कर घूमती रहती है । अब यह कहना तो कठिन है कि मृत्यु के बाद इच्छा ना पूरी होने के कारण आत्मा प्रेत बनती है या नहीं किंतु जीवन रहते भी इच्छा के भाव के कारण मनुष्य या तो दुष्टात्मा या फिर देवतुल्य बन जाता है । यदि इच्छा परोपकार, दान, करुणा और दया की हो तो निश्चय ही मनुष्य देवता हो जाता है । यदि इच्छा क्रोध, ईर्ष्या, लोभ और भय से उपजी हो तो इन नकारात्मक भावों की ऊर्जा में वह मनुष्य किसी प्रेतात्मा से कम नहीं ।
इच्छाओं की भी अपनी ही प्राणशक्ति होती है । नैतिकता की बात छोड़ भी दे तो मनोवैज्ञानिक सदा से यह बताते आए है कि जिन इच्छाओं को हम पूरी नहीं कर पाते या जिन्हें हम अनुचित मानकर मन में दबा लेते है, वे इच्छाएं अपनी स्वयं की प्राणशक्ति से हमारे स्वप्नों में उभर उभर कर आती है । इसीलिए गुडबाय जून के पात्र के संवाद को याद करते हुए ख़्वाजा मीर दर्द के शेर के साथ ही इच्छाओं संबंधित इस लेख को समाप्त करूंगा:

सैर कर दुनिया की ग़ाफ़िल,
ज़िंदगानी फिर कहां,
ज़िंदगी गर कुछ रही,
तो ये जवानी फिर कहां ।

“What Is Poison?”

Turkish poet Jalaluddin Rumi replied, “Anything which Is more than our necessity is poison. It may be power, wealth, hunger, ego, greed, laziness, love, ambition, hate, or anything.

अति का भला न बोलना, अति की भली न चूप,
अति का भला न बरसना, अति की भली न धूप।

Often, a sane advice or a moral lesson just fails to impact you - whatever be the credibility of your guide. It is therefore said that if you have embarked on a spiritual journey, you find an appropriate guru at an appropriate time according to your readiness and maturity to grasp the teaching.

The reverse is also true; an event or a part of a stray conversation stays with you for long even if those words have not been uttered by a wise or a seasoned person and could have ben thrown at you very casually. In fact, those words may not have even been addressed to you specifically. The latter thing happened to me while watching a movie, ‘Frankenstein’, recently on Netflix. The title of this piece is from a dialogue of that movie. Actually, the entire dialogue was: “Abundance can be disorienting unless one hones one’s aim.”

The context of this dialogue in the movie is very macabre. The protagonist is Victor Frankenstein who is looking for bodies with tall and strong limbs among the soldiers who have died in the recent war and who lie scattered on the snow. Viktor, a medical doctor by profession, wants those dead bodies, still not rotten because of snow, for carrying out his bizarre experiment of infusing new life in them in his laboratory. While rummaging through the heap of dead bodies, Victor is cautioning, rather heartlessly, his colleagues to choose only the best specimens by focusing on his requirement of able and strong bodies and not to be overawed by the sheer number of casualties.

The movie, with all its special effects, got over in about two hours but the specific dialogue kept on haunting me for days. The words grew beyond the given context. It was then I realized that that I had been reading or hearing the same sentiment right from childhood in school and elsewhere through the thoughts of many saints, philosophers, poets and storytellers as in Leo Tolstoy’s ‘How much land does a man need?’, Greek myth of King Midas, the story of golden goose and many more. This was yet another proof, if one was required, that words do not sink in our psyche with their intended profoundness till we are sufficiently wise or humble to receive them in all earnestness.

There is an old funny riddle that was asked to me by a friend of mine form Bihar, “When does a stray donkey get malnourished- during summer when there is hardly any fodder available or during rainy season when green succulent grass grows everywhere?” The metaphorical answer to this apparently trivial question is quite revealing: the donkey gets famished during rainy season because it cannot make up its mind as to which grass is the juiciest in the entire landscape and also because it is under a stress that it has to eat it all before the dry season comes again. Abundance of grass, its basic food, becomes disorienting for the donkey!

Forget about the donkey, even human beings get disoriented by too much food- at least I am. At home when food is simple and I am served one lentil dish and one dry curry, I eat calmly. When I go to a wedding feast, I am dumbstruck by the lavish spread of the menu. I move around just like the figurative donkey in search of the choicest dish. Whether to start with soup and end with dessert or to skip the main course altogether and gorge exclusively on all sweet dishes? This temptation is notwithstanding my HbA1c reading precariously bordering around pre-diabetic condition and a slightly protruding belly. I believe I am not the only one disoriented on such occasions.

The movie, Frankenstein, that brewed in my mind for long is based on novel written by Mary Shelley in 1818 and it is not the first time that this work of fiction inspired the movie producers; there have been people who produced movies earlier by the same title. However, what is interesting is that you fast forward the human history nearly two hundred years since the novel was written and you come across many psychological studies affirming the insightful dialogue of Mary Shelley. Sheena Iynger and Lepper published a scientific research in 2009 and declared that too much choice is quite bewildering and it actually prevents people from arriving at a decision from the many options available before them.

Subsequently, other psychologists like Schwartz published different variants of that study and demonstrated that sale of jam bottles in a super store really dropped down when more varieties of jams were on the shelves just because it caused cognitive overload causing consumers to postpone their purchase and they simply moved on without picking any variety of jam at all. Mary Shelley must be smiling in her grave, just like the monster of the movie, on getting the endorsement for her insight by the modern psychologists.

Rumi, quoted at the beginning of the article, said anything in excess is poison. What about knowledge, wisdom or awakening? We have been taught from childhood that there is always something to learn throughout life. Is abundance of knowledge also disorienting or does it always bring discrimination and clarity of thought? It seems to be a paradox. Yet, there is one example that comes to my mind when even abundance of spiritual awakening was definitely disorienting.

In the battle of Mahabharat, Arjun was confused whether to fight his own kith and kin and expressed his reluctance to Lord Krishna, his charioteer. While explaining to Arjun about karma, Lord Krishna showed his all powerful presence in the universe from which all living beings draw sustenance and in to which all merge after death. The grand vision displayed by Lord Krishna in Kurukshetra has been poetically captured by Ramdhari Singh Dinkar in his long poem, Rashmirathi.

The knowledge or awakening that Arjun was exposed to by the grand vision of god, frightened him so much that he begged Lord Krishna to revert to the form of his childhood friend that Arjuna was used to. Perhaps, the title of this piece applies universally. Hence, I also need to end the article before I disorient the readers!

कल सुबह मैं त्रिवेंद्रम में अपने होटल से वन विभाग के मुख्यालय की ओर टहलते हुए निकल पड़ा। परिसर के मुख्य द्वार में प्रवेश करते समय—एक ऐसा साधारण-सा काम, जिसे मैं अतीत में अनगिनत बार कर चुका था—मुझे अचानक सुरक्षा गार्ड ने रोक लिया और आने का कारण पूछा। दिन की शुरुआत थी और अभी सूर्योदय ठीक से हुआ भी नहीं था, इसलिए स्वाभाविक ही था कि मेरा वहाँ किसी सरकारी काम से होना उसे संदेहास्पद लगा हो।

मैंने अपनी ‘शुद्ध’ मलयालम में उसे उसे अपना परिचय दिया और बताया कि मैं कई वर्षों तक इस परिसर में रह चुका हूँ और बस इसे फिर से देखना चाहता हूँ।

गार्ड ने मेरी ओर गहराई से देखा और पूछा, “क्या आप उत्तर भारत से है?”
तभी मुझे एहसास हुआ कि भाषा पर मेरी सारी मेहनत और आत्मविश्वास के बावजूद, मैं यहाँ अब भी एक बाहरी व्यक्ति ही था।

मैंने उसकी बात पर हल्की मुस्कान के साथ सिर हिलाया l उसने भी आत्मीयता से मुझे भीतर जाने का रास्ता दे दिया ।

अंदर पहुँचकर जब मेरी नज़र टाइप–IV क्वार्टर्स पर पड़ी, तो पुरानी यादों का भारी सैलाब मन में उमड़ने लगा। मेरी दोनों बेटियाँ, मेरी पत्नी और मैं—हम सबने इस घर में कई साल बिताए थे। उस जगह से जुड़ी अनगिनत स्मृतियाँ जैसे अचानक जाग उठीं। लेकिन घर अब सुनसान, और भुतहा लग रहा था चूँकि उसमें अब कोई रहता नहीं है और वह खाली पड़ा है ।

कुछ क्षण वहाँ बिताकर जब मैं कैंपस से बाहर आया, तो मन में एक प्रश्न कौंधा—क्या छह साल की सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद आखिरकार मैं अपनी जड़ों के पास लौट आया हूँ?
या फिर असल में अपनी जड़ों की ओर लौटना तो तब होगा जब मैं भोपाल की उड़ान पकड़ूँगा, जहाँ मैं अब रहता हूँ?
और शायद, मेरी जड़ों के बचे–खुचे अंश तो अब भी देहरादून की मिट्टी में दबे हों, जहाँ मैंने अपना बचपन गुज़ारा था।

संभव है कि मैं वास्तव में एक ऐसा पथिक हूँ, जिसकी कोई स्थायी जड़ ही नहीं है ।
और सच पूछिए तो, क्या हम सब किसी न किसी रूप में भटकते हुए यात्री नहीं हैं?
अंतर बस इतना-सा है—कुछ लोग अपने घर की चारदीवारी में टिके रहने के बावजूद भी मन में विचरते रहते हैं। सबकी यात्रायें भिन्न हैं l
